# Reply to Instagram comments with an AI Agent

> Use a Fliqr AI Agent for public comment replies and private Instagram or Messenger follow-ups.

Standard comment automation can send fixed text or a flow. With **AI comment replies**, you can also select an **AI Agent** for:

* **Public replies** in the comment thread
* **Private replies** in Instagram DM or Messenger

The agent uses your configured prompt, knowledge, and guardrails to answer in context.

## Before you start

* Create and test an [AI Agent](/docs/core-concepts/ai-agents)
* Connect Instagram (and Messenger if you also want Facebook Page comments)
* Know whether you want AI on public replies, private replies, or both

## Set up AI replies

  <Step title="Open comment automation">
    Go to **Tools → Facebook / Instagram Comment Automation**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create or edit an automation">
    Click **Add Post** or open an existing rule.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose what to track">
    Select all posts or specific posts, then choose which comments to match (all, equals, or contains).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select AI Agent for replies">
    Under **Private reply** and/or **Public reply**, choose **AI Agent** and select the agent.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save and enable">
    Save the automation, turn it on, then test on a post with a secondary account.
  </Step>

## When to use AI vs fixed replies

| Approach          | Use when                                                   |
| ----------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- |
| Fixed text / flow | Offers, coupons, or strict scripts                         |
| AI Agent          | Open-ended questions, product FAQs, nuanced public replies |

  For public AI replies, keep the agent tone short and brand-safe. Use private AI replies for longer troubleshooting or lead qualification.
